Research and Education
To give our patients the best results, our highly skilled physicians remain on the cutting edge of orthopedic research.
At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, our joint replacement team focuses on helping you achieve a healthier, better quality of life. We take a personalized approach to each procedure, tailoring it to fit your individual needs.
Our team includes fellowship-trained surgeons who specialize in total hip and knee replacements, the two most common joint replacement procedures. We offer many custom options, as well as traditional reconstructions, with the goal of returning you to activity as quickly as possible.
Our program is unique and well-known for:
You may need total joint replacement if you are experiencing changes to your hip or knee joint functionality that worsen with time and cannot be fixed with conservative, nonsurgical treatment.
Total joint replacement is also used to treat chronic conditions if conservative treatment is no longer effective. These conditions can include:
Our team is experienced in traditional joint replacement surgery, as well as new, less-invasive treatments and custom joint reconstruction.
Our surgeons pioneered the use of 3D printing technology for custom joint replacement. This process uses a 3D printer to create a metal implant that fits the exact measurements and shape of your joint. Custom hip and knee replacements are a good option for most patients.
We also provide many minimally invasive procedures for total or partial knee replacement surgery, including robotic arm-assisted surgery. This technology helps surgeons evaluate bone structure, disease severity, joint alignment and surrounding structures, and plan for surgery by using CT scans that provide 3D images of each patient’s unique anatomy. With this precise planning, surgeons perform partial and total knee replacements more accurately, while preserving soft tissue and healthy bone for faster recoveries.
The Institute’s joint replacement surgeons are also highly skilled at anterior hip replacement, which is performed from the front of the hip. This approach to hip reconstruction is less invasive than traditional surgery and requires less recovery time.
After meeting with your surgeon and care team, you will undergo several diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or CT scan. These tests allow your surgical team to better prepare for your joint replacement, as they can become familiar with your anatomy and understand exactly how the replacement procedure will happen.
You and a family member or caregiver will also attend an education session prior to your surgery and receive a tour of one of our physical therapy facilities. This education session will prepare you for surgery and recovery after the procedure.
On the day of surgery, we will use regional anesthesia and avoid narcotics, if possible, to help improve your recovery time.
Our physical therapists will also work to get you up and out of bed as soon as possible after your procedure, sometimes four to six hours after the surgery. Ideally, we strive to get you home less than two days after surgery, if not sooner.
After treatment, you will undergo regular physical therapy. The length of time and type of physical therapy will be tailored to your needs and will depend on your surgery, age and activity level. Once you return to regular daily activities, your joint replacement should offer pain relief for 10 to 20 years.
Joint replacement as an outpatient procedure is an emerging option that can benefit healthy patients who meet certain criteria. Our physicians use a less-invasive surgical technique that avoids cutting through muscle, resulting in less blood loss and postsurgical pain. They work with nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, the operating room team, anesthesia and social workers to make this possible.
Patients who are interested in going home the same day as their surgery attend an educational planning class to learn about the process and determine if they are good candidates.
I really suffered with the pain for three or four years, but after speaking with Dr. van der Ven and undergoing the hip replacement procedure I'm now pain free.

A custom joint replacement involves taking an MRI or CT scan of your hip or knee to get a detailed picture of your joint. Then, we use 3D printing technology to create a surgical guide and implant that fits your anatomy precisely.
At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, our goal is to get you out of bed and moving as soon as possible, often four to six hours after surgery. Many of our patients can return home within one to two days. In some cases, you may be able to leave the same day as your procedure.
The education program includes a 90-minute information session in which nurses and social workers explain the joint replacement process and what to expect before, during and after surgery. You and your family member or caregiver will also get a tour of one of our rehabilitation facilities, where physical therapy is offered.
