Bone loss can sneak up on you. Although you can’t feel it, your bone structure can weaken gradually over time — for many reasons — and threaten your ability to move and function. Fragile bones increase your risk of fractures or broken bones, which can happen during accidental falls and, in severe cases, during minor bumps or coughing.

You can take steps to protect yourself. Baptist Health Orthopedic Care offers the Bone Health and Fracture Prevention Program to help you stay active and keep your bones as strong as possible.

Our Approach

Our Approach

We provide personalized care that includes:

  • Bone health evaluation and screening guidance
  • Education about how to protect your bones and prevent fractures
  • Diagnosis and management of osteopenia (lower than normal bone mass and bone mineral density)
  • Diagnosis and management of osteoporosis (a bone disease that develops when you lose bone mass and density that the bones become thin, weak and at an increased risk of fracture)

Who is a good candidate for the Bone Health and Fracture Prevention Program?

Everyone benefits — especially those with increased risk of bone loss and broken bones. Consider our Bone Health and Fracture Prevention Program if you:

  • Are over age 50 (Or younger patients at risk for bone loss.)
  • Are prone to frequent falls
  • Consume two or more alcoholic beverages a day
  • Fractured a bone
  • Have a small body frame
  • Have diabetes
  • Have low bone density test results (indicated by a T-score of –1.0 or below)
  • Have low calcium due to poor diet or trouble absorbing nutrients
  • Have parents who fractured a bone
  • Have taken steroid medications for a long time period
  • Smoke

What can I expect during my first appointment?

We’ll welcome you — because you’re taking an important step to improve your bone health.

Will I need medication to treat bone loss?

Medications can be recommended if your bone density tests reveal that you’ve suffered high bone loss or if you’ve already suffered fractures. We’re happy to prescribe and manage your bone loss medicine within our practice.

Is it really possible to improve my bone health?

Bone loss is a treatable condition. We’ll help you build bone and prevent future bone loss through nutrition, exercise, medication and proper testing and monitoring of your bone health.

How long will I participate in the Bone Health & Fracture Prevention Program?

We’ll create a care plan designed to address your unique needs. We’ll monitor your bone health closely with lab work and bone density scans. We’ll see you periodically to help you stay as healthy and active as possible.
