At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, our goal is to find the source of any spine- or back-related pain and determine the best treatment to fix the problem, so you can lead an active, pain-free life. We focus on using conservative solutions that can pinpoint your diagnosis and treat your condition.

Our team of specialists uses minimally invasive tests and treatments for spine and back conditions. Whether we use steroid injections, diagnostic injections or other image-guided procedures, we aim to diagnose and treat your condition quickly and accurately.

If you require more extensive spine surgery, we work closely with Miami Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeons, as well as other surgeons. Together, we will determine the  source of your pain and successfully treat your condition.

How are spine and back conditions diagnosed?

Our team uses advanced diagnostic tests to locate the exact source of your spine or back pain. We use imaging, such as CT scans and MRIs, to determine your precise diagnosis.

We also use X-ray-guided injections, to diagnose conditions. If the injection relieves pain, it can help us find which part of the back or spine is causing the problem.

Our team is also skilled in electromyography (EMG) nerve conduction studies. This procedure helps us check whether nerves in your back and spine are working properly.

If surgery is needed, we may use tests like discographies to help surgeons better plan your treatment. During a discography, we inject a contrast dye into discs in your back while taking an X-ray. This procedure can help us find pain points in your back, and the image can show us where there may be a problem with one of the discs.

How are spine and back conditions treated at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

When treating spine and back conditions, we focus on using the most conservative treatments possible. This may start with exercise and physical therapy. In some cases, we may use steroid injections to relieve pain or to diagnose the source of your pain.

Treatments at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care may include:

  • Atlantoaxial (C1-2) joint injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sacral vertebroplasties
  • Sacrococcygeal joint injections
  • Sacroiliac joint block
  • Selective nerve root blocks
  • Transforaminal epidural injections
  • Vertebrae procedure
  • Vertebroplasty

Our team also specializes in percutaneous image-guided lumbar decompression to treat lumbar spinal stenosis. This innovative therapy uses X-rays to help guide surgical tools that cut or remove part of a ligament or bone that is causing nerve pain. The tools are inserted through a tube that is placed in a port in the back without the need for open surgery, known as a laminectomy. This treatment is effective in approximately 75 to 80 percent of patients with spinal stenosis.

If you need more invasive spine surgery, we work closely with Miami Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeons and other surgeons to find the right treatment for your condition.

Some patients complain that they’re starting to hear their necks crack or their backs or other joints. The cracking is basically nitrogen bubbles developing in the joint that are popping out. It’s part of the mechanism of your body and a sign that there’s already some wear and tear. It’s mostly nothing to worry about.
