How are hand and wrist injuries diagnosed?

At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, we thoroughly evaluate each patient to help determine the most effective treatment. Our team will use a combination of a physical exam and diagnostic tests to verify the type of hand or wrist problem you have. After a physical exam, we may use imaging, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs, to determine the extent of your injury and how best to treat it.

How are hand and wrist conditions treated at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

When treating hand and wrist conditions, we understand that your injury may be linked to a hobby or activity you are passionate about or a professional career. With that in mind, we will work closely with you to find the right treatment and recovery plan to help you return to an active lifestyle as soon as possible.

Our team may first recommend conservative treatment, including braces, over-the-counter pain relief, heat and ice. We may also recommend physical therapy to help rebuild strength and range of motion.

Depending on your condition, we may recommend surgery to repair torn ligaments and cartilage. We may choose to do traditional, open surgery or a minimally invasive procedure to achieve the best results. Our hand and upper extremity orthopedic surgeons are also microvascular surgeons who can treat microvascular issues in any part of the body. They are also trained to treat trauma-related hand and upper extremity injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We believe your rehabilitation should be centered around an activity or sport you like. Our team will structure your rehabilitation so it includes exercises and motions you are familiar with.

  • We specialize in treating Kienbock’s disease with minimally invasive surgeries. In some cases, if we can diagnose the condition early, we are able to help patients avoid any negative effects of the disease.

  • We have helped pioneer a new procedure to stabilize cartilage tears on the small finger side of the wrist, also known as triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tears. The procedure uses a FAST-FIX anchor and technique called a Herbert sling, which help stabilize the TFCC. Most patients who undergo this surgery can achieve 90 percent of their previous strength after a TFCC.
