How are arm and elbow injuries diagnosed?

At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, your diagnosis starts with a physical exam done by an athletic trainer, who is expertly familiar with the musculoskeletal system. The athletic trainer then collaborates with our team of sports medicine doctors and orthopedic surgeons to determine your exact diagnosis.

We often use diagnostic tests to confirm the type of arm or elbow injury you have. This may include a high-resolution ultrasound to determine the location and extent of your injury, and to view how movement may affect your condition. Our team may also use high-resolution MRIs or X-rays as part of your diagnosis.

How are arm and elbow conditions treated at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

When you come to Baptist Health Orthopedic Care for treatment, we focus on incorporating your active lifestyle into an individualized treatment plan. Your treatment will vary depending on your age, activity level and the overall expectations you have for your recovery.

When possible, we will start with conservative treatment options, such as braces, splits or pain medicines.

In some cases, we may use steroid injections or other biologic treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. These injections are done using a high-resolution ultrasound, so we can pinpoint the exact spot where the treatment is needed.

We may also recommend physical therapy to help rebuild strength.

If your injury is severe, or if conservative therapies are no longer effective in treating your condition, we may recommend surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • PRP injections involve drawing your blood and then isolating the platelets before injecting them back into your damaged tissue. There are growth factors within the platelets that can help the tissue heal. Along with physical therapy, this treatment has been shown to be effective in treating tennis elbow, with more than 80 percent of cases resolving after one injection.

  • High-resolution ultrasound allows us to give more precise injections to treat your damaged tissue. The ultrasound also helps us see your injury when you are moving your arm and elbow, which is not possible during an MRI.
