Robotic surgery uses smaller incisions than traditional open surgery. It can result in shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, a lower risk of infection and quicker recovery times. Heart surgeons at Baptist Health use robotic surgery to treat many heart conditions, including artery blockages, valve disease and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

Why Baptist Health?

Why Baptist Health?

Baptist Health’s robotic surgery program is one of the most robust in the country. With our highly experienced and specialized surgeons and the latest sophisticated robotic platforms, you can expect high-quality, compassionate care from our team.

Heart surgeons at Baptist Health specializing in robotic surgery have extensive training and experience. Many have performed thousands of cases, taught other surgeons and developed new techniques for the robotic platform.

At Baptist Health South Miami Hospital, robotic surgery is designated a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery by the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association. The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists named South Miami Hospital a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Why Robotic Heart Surgery?

Robotic surgery enables surgeons to perform complex heart procedures with more precision and flexibility compared to open heart surgery.

In robotic surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions between the ribs on the side of the chest. The team sets up four robotic arms with tiny surgical tools and a 3D camera (endoscope). These tools will fit through the incisions.

The surgeon sits at a console with a high-definition monitor and uses hand and foot controls to direct the robotic arms and perform the surgery. Surgeons describe the instruments as extensions of their hands. They have even better range and dexterity than normal hand and wrist movements.

Robotic heart surgeries available at Baptist Health include:

All surgeries involve potential risks and benefits. Your surgeon will work with you and your loved ones to decide if robotic surgery is the best option for you.

Robotic surgery may not be suitable for patients with a history of lung surgery, a history of repeated pneumonia or anatomical abnormalities.

Types of Robotic Heart Surgery

Baptist Health offers many types of robotic heart surgeries. Some of the more common types include:

  • Surgeons use the Maze procedure to treat people with a type of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) called atrial fibrillation, or Afib. Maze involves creating scar tissue in the heart’s upper chambers. The scar tissue prevents electrical signals in the heart from triggering Afib.

  • An ASD is a hole in the heart wall separating the heart’s upper chambers (atria). Some ASDs close on their own, but others require a surgical repair.

  • CABG is the most common heart surgery in the United States. CABG takes healthy blood vessels from other parts of the body to create a bypass around a blockage in your arteries. The goal is to increase blood flow to your heart.

  • When there is damage to one of your heart valves, your surgeon can implant a replacement valve during either open or minimally invasive surgery. Some valves are made from cow or pig tissue, and others are prosthetic (metal or plastic).

  • Surgeons may use robotic heart surgery to remove cancerous or noncancerous tumors in the heart.

Meet Our Expert Surgeons

Makoto Hashimoto, M.D.

Makoto Hashimoto, M.D.

Dr. Hashimoto is an internationally renowned cardiac surgeon who has been part of more than 500 robotic heart surgeries.Dr. Hashimoto is passionate about robotic cardiac surgery because, compared to open-heart surgery, it offers advanced, safe and reliable treatment while also enabling patients to heal faster and return to their normal activities more quickly. Before joining the heart and vascular team at Baptist Health, he launched a robotic surgery program in Sapporo, Japan. This program is now one of Japan’s leading robotic surgery centers.
