What is Vein Disease?

Vein disease, also called venous or reflux disease, is any condition that affects the structure or function of your veins. Symptoms of vein disease may include pain, swelling, or skin changes.

What Should I Expect at the Vein Clinic?

The Vein Clinic is conveniently located in our accredited vascular lab on the Boca Raton Regional Hospital campus. This means you’ll have immediate access to the latest imaging technology and technologists specially trained to diagnose vein disease.

When you visit the Vein Clinic, you’ll receive a comprehensive vascular evaluation. Our team will assess your entire vascular system to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. We’ll review your options, and help you understand what to expect before and after treatment.

What Services and Treatments Are Offered at the Vein Clinic?

We offer a wide range of diagnostic procedures and treatments tailored to your needs. These include:

  • Catheter and port placements for dialysis, chemotherapy, long-term antibiotics or other venous infusions
  • Compression garment fittings for improved blood flow in your legs, arms and pelvis, which can reduce swelling and alleviate symptoms of vein disease
  • IVC filter placement to prevent blood clots from entering your lungs and causing a pulmonary embolism
  • Mechanical thrombectomy to remove blood clots
  • Patient counseling and education
  • Phlebectomy, an office-based procedure that uses micro-incisions to remove bothersome and diseased bulging varicose veins
  • Radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive, office-based procedure which uses radiofrequency to close a damaged or diseased vein

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Spider veins are usually not dangerous.

In rare cases, they may cause bleeding, discomfort or itching. For most people, the primary concern is appearance. If they are bothersome, there are effective treatments available.

  • Mechanical thrombectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove a blood clot from a blood vessel.

A specialist inserts a thin, flexible catheter into the blood vessel to break up or remove the clot.

  • Yes. If left untreated, varicose veins can lead to complications.

These may include painful skin sores, blood clots and leg swelling. In some cases, veins close to the surface of the skin can rupture and bleed.

  • Compression garments, such as stockings or sleeves, apply gentle pressure to help improve blood flow.

They help move blood back toward the heart and can reduce swelling and fluid buildup. They may benefit people with conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins and leg swelling.

  • An inferior vena cava (IVC) filter is a device placed in a large vein to help prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs.

    It may be recommended if:

    • You have blood clots but cannot take blood-thinning medication
    • You have limited mobility after surgery or a serious injury
    • You have had a pulmonary embolism and are at risk for another
