Sleep Medicine

Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care is one of only a few heart care programs in the nation with a built-in sleep medicine program. We integrate sleep health into your cardiac care because a healthy heart starts with restful sleep.

Why Choose Baptist Health for Sleep Medicine Care

At Baptist Health, we understand that quality sleep is essential to protecting your heart. That’s why we’re one of the few cardiovascular programs in the country that integrates sleep medicine directly into heart care. Our unique program connects leading sleep specialists with board-certified cardiologists to address the deep and often underrecognized connection between sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease. With advanced diagnostic tools, tailored treatment plans, and compassionate care teams, we help patients get the rest they need to reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke, arrhythmias and more. Whether you’re struggling with sleep apnea, insomnia, or another sleep issue, Baptist Health is the best place to receive care for your sleep — and your heart.

Our Approach

No two people are the same when it comes to sleep. But we do know the quality of your rest affects your heart. That’s why our team works with you to understand your unique sleep challenges and how your sleep patterns affect your life and health.

We also work to understand your daily routines and schedules so we can develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. Our goal is to help you get restful sleep that protects and strengthens your heart.

What Are Sleep Disorders?

Sleep disorders disrupt your ability to get good quality sleep. They can also increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. To help protect your heart, we treat a wide range of sleep disorders, including:

  • Sleep apnea: Breathing slows or stops multiple times during sleep
  • Upper airway resistance: Causes excessive snoring from collapsed airways
  • Insomnia: Difficulty staying asleep or falling asleep
  • Restless legs syndrome: Urge to move the legs and uncontrollable nighttime movements
  • Parasomnia: Talking, dream enactment, walking or eating during sleep
  • Narcolepsy: Sudden periods of uncontrollable sleep during daily activities
  • Circadian rhythm disorders: When your internal clock doesn’t match external time

Who Benefits From Sleep Medicine Services?

Sleep disorders affect your quality of life and can contribute to serious heart issues. You may benefit from our services if you:

  • Feel sleepy during the day or need frequent naps
  • Get 7–8 hours of sleep but still feel tired
  • Stop breathing while asleep
  • Snore excessively and loudly
  • Routinely take longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep
  • Wake up repeatedly at night or too early in the morning

Our Cardiac Sleep Medicine Program

If sleep disorders affect your quality of life and put your heart health at risk, talk to your physician about adding sleep medicine to your care plan.

How We Diagnose Sleep Conditions

We begin with a review of your personal and family health history, a physical exam, and a detailed questionnaire to evaluate your sleep habits. You may be asked to keep a sleep log.

If necessary, we may recommend a sleep study — either onsite or at home — to monitor brain activity, breathing, snoring and movement during sleep.

How We Treat Sleep Disorders

Your treatment plan will depend on your diagnosis and lifestyle. Options include:

  • CPAP therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) for sleep apnea
  • Medication for restless legs syndrome or hypersomnolence
  • Lifestyle education and guidance to improve sleep habits

CPAP Benefits Include:

  • Lower risk of heart attack or stroke
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Slower heart rate
  • Reduced risk of heart failure

We now know that the timing of the nighttime sleep schedule can significantly impact both physical and mental well being.”
