Lung cancer is most treatable when it’s detected early, and low-dose CT lung screenings play a crucial role in early diagnosis. At Baptist Health, we offer screenings at multiple diagnostic imaging locations across South Florida, using advanced technology and a skilled team of technologists and radiologists dedicated to providing accurate results, personalized guidance, and compassionate care.

What is a Lung Screening?

A lung screening is a low-dose CT scan that takes detailed images of the lungs to look for early signs of lung cancer — often before symptoms appear. This painless imaging test helps detect cancer at its most treatable stage, which can greatly improve outcomes.

At Baptist Health, our imaging experts use advanced low-dose CT scanners designed to capture clear, high-resolution images while keeping radiation exposure minimal. The exam is quick and noninvasive — you simply lie on a table that moves through the scanner as it takes a series of detailed images of your lungs.

These images allow our board-certified radiologists to identify even small nodules or abnormalities that may not be visible on standard X-rays. Lung screenings are performed by licensed technologists specially trained to ensure a comfortable experience and precise image quality.

Why Choose Baptist Health

What Is a Low-Dose CT Scan?

A low-dose CT scan uses advanced X-ray technology to capture detailed images of your lungs with minimal radiation exposure. This noninvasive test helps detect early signs of lung cancer often before symptoms appear.

Who Should Get Screened?

Lung screenings are recommended for adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years and have a 20 pack-year or greater smoking history. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, Baptist Health specialists can guide you through the criteria.

If you smoked, we are providing an eligibility quiz for a low-dose CT that could save your life.

What to Expect During the Scan

At Baptist Health, we want you to feel informed and comfortable every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your CT scan.

    • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal (zippers, buttons, snaps). Avoid jewelry, underwire bras, and any accessories that might interfere with imaging. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
    • Most patients can take their regular medications before the scan. Inform your care team of any health conditions or allergies, especially to contrast materials (though contrast is usually not used for this scan).
    • Arrive at least 15–20 minutes early to complete registration and paperwork. Bring a valid ID, insurance card, and your physician’s order if not submitted in advance. Make sure you have a prescription for the screening, as it is required before scheduling.

    • The scan is performed using a low-dose CT scanner that takes detailed images of your lungs while you lie on a table. You’ll be asked to lie still and hold your breath briefly to help capture clear images.
    • A licensed imaging technologist will guide you through each step and operate the CT scanner from an adjacent room. The technologist maintains communication throughout the scan and ensures your comfort.
    • The actual scanning process takes less than 5 minutes. Total appointment time, including check-in and preparation, is usually under 30 minutes.

    • There are no restrictions after the scan; you can return to your normal activities right away. Since no contrast is used, there’s no recovery time or monitoring needed.
    • A board-certified radiologist will review the images and provide a report within a few business days. Results will be available on the Baptist Health PineApp within 24-48 hours. Your referring physician will also receive the results and discuss them with you.
    • If the scan is clear, you’ll be advised to continue annual screenings if still eligible. If nodules or other findings are detected, your physician may recommend follow-up imaging or additional tests to determine next steps.

What Are the Benefits?

Early detection saves lives. Lung screening can identify small nodules or early cancers before symptoms develop, allowing for more treatment options and better outcomes.

How Often Should I Be Screened?

If you meet the criteria, annual screening is recommended until you’ve been smoke-free for 15 years or your doctor determines screening is no longer beneficial.

What Happens After My Scan?

Your images are reviewed by board-certified radiologists who specialize in lung cancer detection. Results are shared quickly, and if anything unusual is found, our team will contact you to arrange next steps with our lung care specialists.

What Are the Four Lung Function Tests?

In addition to lung screenings, your doctor may recommend lung function tests to measure how well your lungs work. The four most common tests include:

  • Spirometry: Measures how much air you can exhale and how quickly.
  • Lung Volume Test: Evaluates the total amount of air your lungs can hold.v
  • Diffusion Capacity Test: Checks how well oxygen passes from your lungs into your blood.
  • Oximetry or Arterial Blood Gas Test: Measures oxygen levels in your blood.

These tests help doctors understand your overall lung health and can guide next steps if your screening shows areas of concern.

Follow-Up Procedures After Lung Cancer Screening

If your lung screening shows an abnormal finding, our team will contact you quickly to discuss the results. Many findings are noncancerous and simply require short-term follow-up imaging to monitor for changes.

In some cases, additional tests, such as a diagnostic CT scan, PET scan, or biopsy, may be recommended to learn more.

Throughout this process, Baptist Health’s lung specialists and nurse navigators coordinate your next steps, ensuring timely communication and personalized care.
