Cancer screenings can find cancer or abnormal cells before symptoms begin, when treatment is most effective. Screenings may include a physical exam, a review of your medical history, laboratory tests, imaging tests and genetic counseling and testing. Miami Cancer Institute offers cancer screenings, following the guidelines of leading medical groups, and considers higher risks for people with personal or family histories.
We offer the following cancer screenings and recommend talking with your doctor about when you should begin regular screenings.
Recommended Screenings Through the Years
Cervical Cancer Screening
Cervical cancer screenings, such as Pap tests and HPV tests, check for abnormal changes in cervical cells that could lead to cancer. Starting at age 21 through 65, cervical cancer screenings can detect issues early, often before symptoms appear, allowing for timely treatment. Your doctor can recommend how often to be screened.
Colon Cancer Screenings
A colonoscopy is an important screening that helps prevent colorectal cancer by detecting and removing precancerous polyps. This screening is recommended starting at age 45, or sooner if recommended by your doctor.
Lung Cancer Screening
A low-dose CT scan can detect lung cancer at an early stage, before symptoms appear. Talk to your doctor to see if this screening is recommended for you based on certain criteria, such as age, risk factors and family history.
Mammogram
A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to detect early signs of breast cancer, often before symptoms appear. Starting at age 40, mammograms are recommended as an important screening tool that can help find breast cancer early. Your doctor can recommend when and how often you should start screening.
Prostate Cancer Screening
A prostate cancer screening includes a simple PSA blood test and, if needed, a physical exam to check for early signs of prostate cancer. This screening is recommended starting at age 50, or sooner if recommended by your doctor.
Skin Cancer Screening
A skin check is a head-to-toe visual exam that looks for unusual moles or spots that may be early signs of skin cancer. It’s a quick, minimally invasive way to catch problems early. Beginning in early adulthood, it is recommended to have regular skin checks. Your doctor can recommend how often to be screened.
