Music therapy helps patients manage the emotional and psychological challenges of a cancer diagnosis
A cancer diagnosis can profoundly affect every aspect of your life. At Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, our music therapy program can support you through this journey. It’s an integral part of the Cancer Patient Support Center, offering a unique and compassionate approach to health and wellness and cultivating a healing environment throughout your cancer treatment.
Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions that help patients of all ages navigate the symptoms of a cancer diagnosis, such as anxiety, depression, fear and insomnia. Whether learning relaxation techniques, listening to preferred music, analyzing lyrics or engaging in guided song writing, music therapy can play a vital role in the healing process and help you accomplish your individual goals.
Arts in Medicine
Our music therapy program acts as the clinical branch of the Arts in Medicine program. While the Arts in Medicine initiative focuses on providing creative experiences through professional visual, literary and performing artists throughout the building, music therapy uses music-based strategies to provide a more focused and goal-oriented approach that meets the objectives patients have during diagnosis and treatment.
Music therapy offers personalized one-on-one sessions in person or virtual to meet specific clinical objectives tailored to each patient’s needs. These can include stress and anxiety reduction, improved coping skills, improved sleep and support for emotional well-being.
How Music Therapy Can Help
Our dedicated, board-certified music therapists use their music and counseling expertise as a therapeutic tool to help improve your quality of life, from diagnosis through treatment.
Music therapy can help reduce anxiety and worry, improve mood and promote overall well-being. Through the power of music, you’ll find a sense of peace and emotional release. Listening to patient-preferred music can also help promote relaxation, reduce the perception of pain and help patients find comfort and resilience.
Our therapists use evidence-based approaches to create a supportive environment where you can express your emotions and find comfort through music. In our safe space, you can connect with your inner self, express your feelings creatively and build resilience during treatment.
Music Therapy Services We Provide
We designed our music therapy sessions to address various emotional and psychological needs. Because each person has their own needs and goals, our therapists customize each music intervention based on your specific needs, whether increasing positive mood or promoting overall well-being. Some of the therapeutic music experiences we offer include:
- Music-assisted relaxation. We teach techniques to improve symptom management and help you relax and reduce stress.
- Music playlist creation and song discussion. We learn about what you like, your favorite songs, and how music speaks to you and together, we practice self-expression through music.
- Lyric analysis. Active listening helps you find meaning and connection by analyzing song lyrics.
- Songwriting. You’ll have the opportunity to use everything you’ve learned in music therapy to write your own song representing your experience and feelings.
- Active music making. Engaging in music improvisation, instrument playing and singing improves your mood and fosters a sense of joy and accomplishment.
- Reflection. Looking back at all the strategies learned, we devise a plan to continue using music therapy in your day-to-day life.
How Support Groups Help
While our music therapy program primarily focuses on individual sessions, we also recognize the power of community and shared experiences. Our support groups provide a safe setting where patients and their families can connect with others going through similar challenges. These groups focus on emotional support, specific diseases, treatments and common challenges, offering a space for sharing concerns and ideas.
