After receiving a diagnosis of cancer, preparing for your first appointment with a care specialist can be stressful.

Knowing what to expect and the information you will need during your appointment can help alleviate that stress. Because you will be receiving a lot of information, you may want to bring a family member or friend for support.

Items to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Valid photo identification (driver’s license, state ID, military ID or passport).
  • Current insurance card(s).
  • List of your current physicians and their contact information.
  • List of medications, vitamins and supplements you take, including the reason you take them, frequency and dosage amount.
  • List of your allergies.
  • Pharmacy contact information.
  • Medical Power of Attorney and Living Will, if completed.
  • Other personal items such as a notebook and pen, sweater, mobile device, book or magazine and snacks.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During your first appointment, you will meet your physician and cancer care team and learn about your diagnosis and treatment options. Your first visit also may include:

  • An examination by your physician.
  • Additional tests needed for an accurate diagnosis, enabling your physician to prepare your comprehensive treatment plan.
  • Introduction to other members of your medical team.
  • Meeting with your financial counselor to discuss your insurance coverage, out-of-pocket expenses, financial responsibilities and billing questions.
