Osteosarcoma Symptoms & Diagnosis
What are the symptoms of osteosarcoma?
The first symptom of osteosarcoma is usually pain near a joint. Because joint pain is common and can have many causes, this symptom may be overlooked.
Other symptoms may include:
- Tenderness, swelling or redness at the tumor site.
- Bone fracture, especially from routine movement.
- Limited range of motion in the affected body part.
- Limping or pain when lifting depending on the location of the tumor.
How is osteosarcoma diagnosed?
Because osteosarcoma can spread widely, early and accurate diagnosis is critical. Some tests our team may use include:
- Imaging: such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT or CAT) scans.
- Biopsy: removing a small tissue sample, usually while the child is under anesthesia.
