What are the symptoms of gliomas?

The signs and symptoms of a glioma depend on the location and size of the tumor and include:

Headaches that are worse in the morning or go away after vomiting
Seizures
Comprehension problems
Vision or speech issues
Walking and balance problems
Muscle weakness

How are gliomas diagnosed?

Your doctor first checks your signs and symptoms through a neurological exam (a physical exam of the nervous system). If the results of this exam suggest a brain tumor, you will undergo further testing to confirm a diagnosis.

At Miami Cancer Institute, our doctors use the following advanced testing methods to accurately diagnose gliomas:

Imaging tests - Our neuroradiology specialists use computed tomography, positron emission tomography or MRI to create detailed images of your brain. Imaging tests help them learn the location, size and number of tumors and can also show if a tumor is high-grade or low-grade.
Biopsy - A biopsy (examination of brain tumor tissue under a microscope) helps doctors learn the exact type of glioma. It can also provide genetic information (DNA) about the tumor that our specialists use to personalize your treatment. Glioma biopsies may be open or closed depending on the tumor’s location.
