The Ringing of the Bell
A bright silver bell hangs in the lobby of Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute. At the end of active treatment, you’re invited to ring the bell. This tradition was started by Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne of the U.S. Navy, who was undergoing radiation for head and neck cancer. He was following a Navy tradition of ringing a bell to signify “when the job was done.” Today, nearly all cancer facilities have a similar bell that patients ring to mark the end of treatment.
