Breast cancer screening

Breast cancer screening is personal, sometimes unnerving and always important. Mammography and other breast imaging tests offer the best way to find cancer early, before you have symptoms. With early detection, treatment is often more effective and less invasive.

Our centers are recognized as Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

Why turn to us for screening?

Here, we prioritize your health, comfort and safety. We work to provide an exceptional experience for you with:

  • A soothing environment and welcoming staff. Our breast centers were designed for women by women. Our beautiful buildings include sensory-stimulating imaging suites that engage your sight, hearing and smell to reduce anxiety. From the friendly staff who greet you as you walk in the door to the soft, comfy gowns we provide before your mammogram, we work to ease your mind and make your experience as pleasant as possible.
  • State-of-the-art technology and equipment. We use advanced imaging and biopsy services to make things easy for you and provide timely, accurate results. Our technology includes:
    • Low-dose, 3D mammography
    • Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM)
    • High-definition breast ultrasound with elastography
    • Minimally invasive breast biopsy using ultrasound, 3D stereotactic, contrast-enhanced mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance
    • Molecular breast imaging
    • Pristina Dueta™, a device that allows you to control the compression during your mammography, which helps keep you comfortable
    • Revolutionary software that uses deep learning and artificial intelligence to help technologists position you most appropriately and radiologists rapidly analyze your mammogram for increased accuracy of lesion detection.
  • Expertly trained technologists and radiologists. The technologists who perform your exams have special certifications in breast imaging. Additionally, the radiologists reading those exams are board-certified and fellowship trained in breast radiology.
  • Same-day results. We understand that waiting days for your screening test results can make you anxious, which is why we’re committed to providing results while you wait. If additional imaging tests are recommended, you have the option to complete them during your visit.
  • Compassionate patient navigators. If doctors recommend a biopsy, we will assign a patient navigator to coordinate your care. Their role is to make things easier for you by answering your questions, providing education, arranging consultations with our breast specialists, if necessary. They can also familiarize you with the services of the Lynn Cancer Institute.
  • Team-based specialty care. Our team approach to care includes imaging experts, breast surgeons, genetics specialists, pathologists, radiation therapists, medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, patient navigators and social workers. That means you’ll have expert assistance if, or when, you need it.

When to get screened

Knowing your personal risk for developing breast cancer is key to developing your breast imaging surveillance plan. It is recommended that all women have a formal breast risk assessment by the age of 25. Any physician can do this. We determine your care plan based on the outcome of the assessment.

If you’re at average risk for breast cancer, Baptist Health South Florida recommends yearly mammograms beginning at age 40. However, if you’re considered high-risk, your screening regimen may vary. You and your healthcare provider can best determine when you should begin screening and which imaging tests are right for you.

During your visit to any Schmidt Family Center for Breast Care, we obtain your personal and family history of cancer as part of the interview process to calculate your risk for breast cancer. Using this information, along with your breast density, our radiologists individualize recommendations for future screening tests. These could include 3-D screening mammography, breast ultrasound, contrast-enhanced mammography, molecular breast imaging or breast MRI.
