Comprehensive Oral Health Support
Oral Medicine & Oral Oncology supports patients across every stage of care, with an emphasis on prevention, early detection and symptom management:
- Preventive care and screening: Identifying oral (mouth) diseases early and addressing risk factors before they become more serious.
- Support during treatment: Managing oral symptoms to help patients remain comfortable and maintain nutrition and daily activities.
- Ongoing and survivorship care: Monitoring oral health over time and addressing late or long-term effects.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
No. Many patients are referred for evaluation of oral symptoms, screening of oral changes or preventive care. Not all oral conditions are cancer-related, and early evaluation can help identify and address concerns before they become more serious.
-
Patients may be referred for persistent mouth sores, oral pain, dry mouth, tissue changes, difficulty eating or speaking, or other ongoing oral concerns — especially if symptoms do not improve over time or occur during cancer treatment.
-
Not always. Many visits involve examination, monitoring and nonsurgical management. If additional testing such as a biopsy is recommended, the care team will explain why it is needed and what to expect before moving forward.
-
Oral Medicine specialists help manage treatment-related side effects, reduce discomfort and support oral function during therapy. This may include symptom management strategies, preventive care and coordination with the oncology team.
-
Yes. Many cancer survivors benefit from ongoing oral health monitoring and care to address long-term or late-onset effects of treatment and to support overall quality of life.
-
Referrals may come from oncologists, dentists, ENTs, primary care providers or other specialists. Patients may also be referred as part of their care within Lynn Cancer Institute’s Head and Neck Cancer program.
Clinical Trials
At Lynn Cancer Institute, we treat cancer in today’s patients and offer hope for those who may get the disease in the future. Through clinical trials, we study promising new ways to diagnose and treat cancer. As our patient, you have access to trials and treatments that aren’t widely available elsewhere.
If a clinical trial may be right for you, we’ll talk with you about the potential benefits and risks. We make your overall well-being and safety our top priority if you choose to participate.
