What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer affecting American women. But thanks to screening services and modern therapies, breast cancer is highly treatable, especially when found early.

Cancer occurs when cells in the body grow uncontrollably. These cells form a tumor that may live in nearby tissues or break away and create new tumors in other parts of the body.

Most breast cancer develops in the milk ducts, but it can also start in the milk glands (lobules) or other areas. Although breast cancer is far more common in women, it can also appear in men. Lynn Cancer Institute treats all types of breast cancer in both men and women.

Surviving Breast Cancer

Surviving Breast Cancer

It’s possible to have breast cancer for years before you notice any changes in your breast. So, early detection is key to surviving the disease. Thanks to improved screening, mammography and other detection methods, many patients find breast cancer early. The earlier you find breast cancer, the easier it is to treat for the best results, including a full remission.

About 90 percent of people with breast cancer survive the disease. When cancer cells haven’t spread from their original location, the breast cancer survival rate after five years approaches 99 percent. After 10 years, the survival rate for these patients is 85 percent.
