What Is a Headache Disorder?

Headache disorders are repeated headaches that cause pain or discomfort in the head, scalp or neck. Doctors put them in one of two categories:

  • Primary headaches. Primary headaches include migraine, tension and cluster headaches.
  • Secondary headaches. Secondary headaches are headaches caused by other health conditions.

Types of Headaches

There are many types of headaches our specialists treat, including:

  • Sinus headaches. Pressure around the eyes, cheeks and forehead.
  • Tension headaches. Can feel like a tight band wrapped around your head that puts painful pressure on your forehead and temple.
  • Cluster headaches. A severe burst of pain on one side of the head that can happen multiple times a day and continue for weeks or months.
  • Migraines. A recurrent type of headache that can cause nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.

When to See Headache & Migraine Specialist

Headaches are common. But if you experience headaches several times a week or month or have serious symptoms that get in the way of your life, you should talk to your doctor. You should see a headache specialist if your headaches will not go away or worsen over time even with treatment.

You should go to the emergency room immediately if you experience a severe headache that starts quickly without notice and if you have a fever, numbness, weakness, nausea or vision problems. These may be signs of a more serious condition.

How Are Migraines & Headaches Diagnosed?

If you have migraines or repeated headaches, our neurologists will talk with you about your medical history and learn more about your headache frequency. We’ll also conduct a physical exam.

Our team may also use blood or imaging tests to confirm a headache disorder diagnosis.

Migraine & Headache Treatments

Our neurologists work with each person to understand their headache type and learn about past failed treatments. From there, we develop a customized approach that will work quickly to reduce their pain and meet your unique needs.

Treatments may include over-the-counter or prescription medications. We also offer:

  • Botox injections. Botox injections are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved to treat chronic migraines. Doctors may recommend Botox injections every three months to relax muscles so they are less pain-sensitive.
  • Infusion therapy. Newer infusion therapies — medications delivered via an IV — work by stopping the release of pain-causing chemicals.
