Longitudinal Experiences

Our program curriculum incorporates several longitudinal rotations, immersing trainees in particular areas of study throughout the entire duration of the training program.

  • Fellows will perform arthroplasty cases related to the hip and knee in both an ambulatory surgical center and a hospital operating room. Doctors Hospital has recently opened a state of the art Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) which is fully dedicated to orthopedic procedures. The 4,500 square ft facility is one of the world’s most advanced and efficient operating room suites. Two of the four operating rooms have observation windows, andfully integrated, live operating room viewing capabilities are available throughout the building.

The hospital has ten large surgical suites outfitted with the latest orthopedic surgery capital equipment. A dedicated orthopedic inpatient ward provides patients requiring an overnight stay exceptional orthopedic care in private rooms. Fellows are supported by an orthopedic nurse practitioner (Monday through Friday) as well as an array of ancillary staff that includes physical and occupational therapists. The inpatient unit also utilizes Cerner as the EMR to allow for continuity of care between the outpatient office and the inpatient setting.

  • Fellows spend between 1 to 1.5 half days per week in clinic evaluating patients with musculoskeletal injuries. Fellows evaluate patients prior to surgery and follow them throughout their post-op care. Our recently renovated 49,000-square-foot outpatient has 42 exam rooms. The pod concept design with “touchdown” staff work areas allows clinical teams to collaborate across subspecialties. The space includes a dedicated office space for the fellows. During clinic, physicians are supported by allied health professionals that including PA’s (Physicians Assistants), ATC’s (Certified Athletic Trainers), and MA’s (Medical Assistants).

  • Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in multiple ongoing research projects within the institute. There are ample support for research including personnel - a research PhD, Certified Clinical Research Coordinators, and several volunteers – and resources such as the medical library and the BioSkills lab. In addition to participating in ongoing projects, fellows are encouraged to perform their own original research projects. Fellows receive a laptop during orientation for their use during the fellowship year, and have a well-equipped dedicated office space.

The Cadaveric Bio-skills Lab is an integral part of the Institute’s educational program and it provides a simulated surgical setting that allows our physicians to conduct hands-on cadaveric evaluations, surgical education, research studies and clinical trials. The lab has broadcast capabilities for a seamless learning experience.

  • Fellows provide sideline coverage at a variety of sporting events. On the high school level, our institution takes care of the Miami-Dade County Public High Schools as well as numerous private schools. On the collegiate level, we provide care to Florida International University Athletics, Barry University and St. Thomas University. On the professional level, fellows have the opportunity to provide coverage for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, NBA’s Miami HEAT, NHL’s Florida Panthers and the MLS’ Inter Miami CF. Fellows also provide sideline care for other seasonal sporting events like the Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, Orange Bowl, Miami Beach Bowl, and Miami Open.

  • Academic didactics include weekly lectures dedicated to:

    • Anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and immunology as they relate to adult reconstructive orthopaedic surgery.
    • Pain management for the subspecialty, including recognition of the signs of addiction.
    • Evaluation of practices that ensure and improve patient safety.
    • The program faculty and fellows will meet on a weekly basis to discuss the cases that will take place during the week.
  • The program faculty, fellow and allied health practitioners meet monthly to discuss the latest in adult reconstructive orthopaedic surgery.

  • The primary purpose of Rehabilitation Services is to provide assessment, therapeutic treatment and education to each patient and their family members. The rehabilitation plan is designed to promote health, restore function and improve overall life-style. Fellows collaborate directly with physical therapists and ATC’s.

  • Each year, fellows participate as instructors for the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Musculoskeletal Course. This course allows them to develop and hone their skills as they teach 4th year medical students.

Mr. Bokamper says he is extremely grateful for Dr. Vasquez and the entire team because he’s at the point where he can barely remember he had the back pain at all — and “quite frankly they gave me my life back.”

Now, my horizon is the way that it should be. I am going to be able to play volleyball again; I am going to be able to go to the beach again; I am going to be able to carry my son again; I am going to be able to go to his field day and do, I don’t know, the three legged race — And that is what I want.
