MIAMI – September 1, 2020 – Baptist Health South Florida is pleased to announce the appointment of Stanley Shapiro, DDS, to the Board of Directors of Baptist Health Medical Group, part of Baptist Health South Florida.
A consultant to businesses in a variety of specialized fields in recent years, Dr. Shapiro has developed coverage plans, recruited networks, interfaced with regulators, coordinated with medical plans and led large organizations throughout his career. He was a founder of dental and vision ancillary benefits company OHS, Inc., (originally Oral Health Services) in 1978 and led it as President and CEO until 2000, when it merged with a national company to become CompBenefits. During his time at CompBenefits, Dr. Shapiro worked to create the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Plan (FEDVIP), and appeared as an expert witness for the industry during Congressional hearings. FEDVIP became law in 2004, and CompBenefits was selected as a carrier in 2006 for nine million eligible participants.
In 2008, Dr. Shapiro became a founder of Professional Bank. He served on the Board of Directors from 2008-2017, as Vice Chairman from 2008-2010 and Chairman of the Board from 2010-2013. He also served as a director for Superior Vision Services from 2012 to 2016, where he recruited senior management and helped grow the company to 12 million members in those four years.
“We are proud to welcome Dr. Shapiro to Baptist Health South Florida,” said Bernie Fernandez Jr., M.D., CEO of Baptist Health Medical Group. “He brings a vast knowledge of business and a unique perspective, that we are grateful he is willing to share to advance our Board.”
