South Miami Hospital awarded Pre-term Labor and Prematurity Certifications from The Joint Commission
SOUTH MIAMI, FL – December 14, 2020 – South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Pre-term Labor Certification and Prematurity Certification for the fourth time since 2013. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. South Miami Hospital is the only organization in the state of Florida and one of few in the nation to earn both designations.
Awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care. To earn the certifications, South Miami Hospital underwent rigorous, unannounced onsite reviews. The Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with pre-term labor- and prematurity-specific requirements. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“We are truly honored to receive these prestigious designations for the fourth time,” said Leah William-Jones, director of Nursing Services at South Miami Hospital. “We are dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care and using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to optimize treatment for our deserving patients.”
The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The standards are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help hospitals measure, assess and improve performance.
“Earning The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® demonstrates our staff’s continuous compliance with stringent performance standards that achieve the best outcomes for patients,” said Bill Duquette, CEO of South Miami Hospital. “I am extremely proud of the entire Center for Women & Infants team.”
“Gold-level certification by The Joint Commission recognizes healthcare organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, R.N., MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend South Miami Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for patients.”
