South Miami Hospital Awarded COPD Certification from The Joint Commission
SOUTH MIAMI, FL – December 9, 2020 – South Miami Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with national performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a healthcare organization’s commitment to providing safe and high-quality patient care.
The certification recognizes healthcare organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for COPD. The Joint Commission evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.
“Our team is extremely proud to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for our superior COPD care program,” said Miguel A. Gomez, director of Respiratory Services at South Miami Hospital. “With the right treatment plans, patients diagnosed with COPD can have a better quality of life. Our main goal is to teach patients to take care of themselves the best way possible to prevent them from having symptom flare-ups and avoid returning to the hospital.”
Bill Duquette, CEO of South Miami Hospital, added, “Achieving gold-level recognition is a reflection of the Respiratory Services team’s efforts and commitment to provide exceptional care through a comprehensive program that addresses the wide-ranging needs of COPD patients.”
South Miami Hospital’s Respiratory Services department underwent a rigorous onsite review to earn the certification. During the visit, the team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards, including delivering clinical care, managing program components and supporting patient self-management. The Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted observations and interviews.
“Gold-level certification by The Joint Commission recognizes healthcare organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, R.N., MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend South Miami Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for COPD patients.”
