Peter J DeMaria MD joins Miami Cancer Institute as Medical Oncologist
MIAMI, FL – May 24, 2023 – Board-certified medical oncologist Peter DeMaria, M.D., recently joined Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. DeMaria is a medical oncologist who cares for patients and has extensive experience in clinical research at the national level. His role at the Institute includes developing and overseeing a portfolio of clinical studies of novel cancer therapies that are in the early stages of development. Dr. DeMaria is fluent in English and Spanish.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. DeMaria to our dedicated team of cancer specialists,” said Leonard Kalman, M.D., executive deputy director and chief medical officer at Miami Cancer Institute. “He is an excellent clinician who provides compassionate, expert care for people dealing with a cancer diagnosis. And his experience as a cancer researcher further strengthens our ability to provide patients in South Florida with access to potentially promising new therapies that are not yet widely available.”
Dr. DeMaria, a Miami native, earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He then completed residency training in internal medicine and a clinical fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He joined the federal government as a clinical fellow with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and completed training in hematology and oncology through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Intramural Research Program (Bethesda, MD).
Dr. DeMaria completed further fellowship training in cancer drug development with the NCI-U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Interagency Oncology Task Force (Silver Spring, MD), a joint fellowship program with the NCI, NIH and FDA. Before joining the Institute, Dr. DeMaria was a medical officer with the Office of Oncologic Diseases at the FDA.
“I’m excited to be part of a program at Baptist Health that gives cancer patients in South Florida the opportunity to participate in clinical trials close to home,” Dr. DeMaria said. “Such trials are designed to answer important questions in developing new cancer therapies. But they also provide hope to patients whose cancer has not responded to standard-of-care treatment.”
Dr. DeMaria sees patients at Miami Cancer Institute, located at 8900 North Kendall Dr., Miami, FL 33176.
