Thoracic Surgeon Nathaniel R. McElhaney, M.D., FACS, Joins Baptist Health
BOCA RATON, FL – April 1, 2024 – Double board-certified thoracic surgeon Nathaniel R. McElhaney, M.D., FACS, has joined the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. He is certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery and specializes in treating conditions of the chest cavity and lungs, such as lung cancer.
Prior to joining Lynn Cancer Institute, Dr. McElhaney was a thoracic surgeon at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Corning Hospital, both located in Pennsylvania.
“We are happy to welcome Dr. McElhaney to our multidisciplinary cancer care team dedicated to the highest quality care,” said Louise Morrell, M.D., medical director at Lynn Cancer Institute. “Dr. McElhaney will bring expertise in the surgical treatment of lung and other thoracic cancers and will provide patients expert specialty care, close to home.”
Dr. McElhaney earned his medical degree at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He completed a general surgery internship at Western Pennsylvania Hospital and a general surgery residency at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where he served as chief resident. He also completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. McElhaney collaborates with the multidisciplinary cancer team to provide each patient with comprehensive care. He strives to bring the most innovative techniques to lung cancer surgery, often performing minimally invasive surgery such as lobectomies and segmentectomies, which decrease patient morbidity. His clinical research focuses on ways to improve outcomes for patients with complex thoracic disease.
The patient-physician relationship is important to Dr. McElhaney. “I spend time educating patients and families and addressing the questions and concerns they may have when dealing with a cancer diagnosis,” said Dr. McElhaney. “Since cancer care does not end after surgery, I follow up with my patients throughout their treatment journey. I also join them in celebrating positive outcomes and help them find strength and resilience during challenging times.”
Dr. McElhaney will see patients at two Lynn Cancer Institute locations: 10301 Hagen Ranch Road, Suite A-960, Boynton Beach, FL 33484; and 16313 S. Military Trail, Delray Beach, FL 33484.
