Baptist Health Orthopedic Care First to use Innovative Device to Treat Long Bone Injuries

MIAMI – September 9, 2020 – Dr. Charles Jordan, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, part of Baptist Health, is the first in the world to implant a new-to-the market, 3-D printed Graft Cage to heal long bone injuries. Long bone injuries often result from traumatic impacts, such as bad car accidents. The TruMatch Graft Cage is 3-D printed in just 10 days, making it highly customizable to a patient’s body to restore and heal long bone injuries. It works by supporting bone grafts, which act as fillers to aid new bone growth and later absorbs into the body, meaning no follow-up procedure is required.

“One of the things that is thought to greatly increase the rate at which bone grafting procedures heal is to have a scaffolding,” said Dr. Charles Jordan, orthopedic trauma surgeon at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. “So, this graft cage is really innovative because it is 3-D printed to the patient’s specifications. We’re actually taking the bone defect and making a model that fits inside that defect. But it is also a scaffolding that remains there for the time it needs to be there. And then it gets absorbed by the body.”

Dr. Jordan added: “This device is kind of like the missing link to the puzzle for these sorts of procedures. We’re changing the way that we treat these injuries. Previously, there was often just a piece missing to fully heal and restore long bone injuries. This is the piece.”

In addition to Dr. Jordan being the first surgeon in the world to implant the Graft Cage, according to Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of the Graft Cage, this is also the first cage implant device to be 3-D printed. Also, while there have been other types of “cages” used for similar procedures, none contain the material to be safely absorbed by the body.
