Miami Cancer Institute to Build Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center
Construction will start during the Fall, 2024 On Baptist Hospital Campus
MIAMI, FL – July 10, 2024 – Miami Cancer Institute CEO and Executive Medical Director Michael Zinner, M.D., announced today that the planned Women’s Cancer Center at the Institute will be named the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center. The Center will be named in honor of Al and Jane Nahmad, who have helped with leadership and governance of Baptist Health for over twenty years and who are now providing a transformational gift in support of Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health. The Women’s Cancer Center is expected to break ground in early fall of 2024, and a naming ceremony is planned upon completion of the facility.
Al and Jane Nahmad are longtime benefactors of Baptist Health, supporting physicians, caregivers, and research throughout the organization for more than 20 years. Al Nahmad was chair of Miami Cancer Institute’s Operating Board during a time of rapid growth for the Institute, as it transformed cancer care and research in South Florida.
“We are immensely grateful for the Nahmad family’s gift and proud to have their names on the Women’s Cancer Center,” said Zinner. “My personal vision has always been to help advance cancer care in my hometown. Their support reflects their belief in our work and their commitment to helping us continue to grow as a national leader in innovative cancer treatment.” Zinner added: “After a long career in cancer care, it is very special to me to leave a mark in the community where I grew up. My late wife passed away from cancer and the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center will help fulfill my vision in her memory.”
Miami Cancer Institute’s future Women’s Cancer Center will provide the most advanced treatment for breast cancer, which makes up about 27 percent of patients treated at Miami Cancer Institute, as well as gynecological and skin cancers. In addition to the cancer care, the facility provides plastic reconstructive surgical visits and Mohs surgery for skin cancer. It will also offer patients the opportunity to have their chemotherapy infusions on site and to participate in additional clinical trials. The state-of-the-art 115,000 sq. ft. facility will feature a contemporary light-filled environment and will be located on the campus of Baptist Hospital in the new Keeley Pavilion. The Center will offer a comprehensive array of services, renowned cancer specialists and a holistic, compassionate approach to care.
“This community is growing rapidly, and so is the need for world-class cancer care,” said Al Nahmad. “We believe the Institute’s expansion will help improve patient access to top physicians and the most advanced treatment options.” Added Jane Nahmad, “We are advocates for women’s health, and supporting the Women’s Cancer Center from its inception is very meaningful for our entire family.”
Miami Cancer Institute’s vision for the Women’s Cancer Center is to deliver world-class cancer care for women, pioneering research, and an exceptional patient experience – all in one unique location. It represents the Institute’s commitment to female patients, who make up 65 percent of the Institute’s unique patients and require highly personalized care. The Center, the first of its kind in our region, will allow the Institute to expand clinical teams, conduct more research trials, and harness the world’s most cutting-edge cancer-fighting technology to bring the best care to more patients in Florida - where demand for care is outpacing available resources — as well as Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. The Women’s Cancer Center will not only address the needs of current patients but will also shape the future trajectory of female cancer treatment in which the disease is prevented, detected earlier, and treated more effectively.
“I am personally thrilled that our new Women’s Cancer Center will be named for the Nahmads,” said Bo Boulenger, President, and CEO of Baptist Health. “It is a wonderful tribute to their support of world-class healthcare in our community. Their generosity enables us to further our vision of advancing cancer care for women, helping improve the lives of our patients for generations to come. I know this legacy will make a lasting impact in South Florida and beyond.”
Miami Cancer Institute, which opened in 2017, cares for nearly 1,300 patients each day. The Institute provides unparalleled expertise in individual cancers and access to the world’s latest cancer discoveries, most effective treatments, and best outcomes – all right here in South Florida.
Baptist Health’s focus on advancing care through research and innovation will be further accelerated by its recent clinical and academic affiliation with Florida International University. Baptist Health’s current residency program will be expanded to put Baptist Hospital on the path toward becoming a statutory teaching hospital.
