Melanie Breglio, BSN, R.N., Earns Fishermen's Community Hospital's Latest DAISY Award

September 9, 2021

MARATHON, FL – September 9, 2021 – Melanie Breglio, BSN, R.N., of Fishermen’s Community Hospital Emergency Department, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The program was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 of idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura at age 33. The DAISY Foundation and award were created as an expression of the Barnes’ family’s gratitude for the care he received from nurses.

Mrs. Breglio received a certificate commending her as an extraordinary nurse.  She also received a DAISY Award pin, bouquet of daisies, banner to hang in her department and a meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, which is hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe.

“Melanie is a glowing example of a DAISY nurse,” said Cheryl Cottrell, vice president and chief nursing officer at Fishermen’s Community Hospital. “She is skilled, knowledgeable and willing to jump in to help patients and coworkers at any time.”

The DAISY Award is presented twice a year at Fishermen’s Community Hospital, and the recipient is chosen by the hospital’s Professional Development Council. The award celebrates nurses’ education, training and skill. Patients, families, and colleagues can submit nominations.

Mrs. Breglio was nominated by a colleague, who wrote, in part: “Melanie’s professionalism as well as care and compassion for her patients and fellow healthcare workers were exemplified earlier this year with her life-saving actions. A patient arrived at Fishermen’s Hospital, and it was quickly determined they would need to be transferred to South Miami Hospital via ambulance. Melanie volunteered to ride with the medical transport team. Her knowledge, skill and patient advocacy kept this patient stabilized during the long ride. Her readiness and skill, in this case, helped both the patient and her fellow healthcare professionals in a time of need and may have saved this patient’s life.”

“Melanie is extremely deserving of this award,” added Mrs. Cottrell. “Melanie’s core values as a nurse embody the true spirit of the DAISY Award.”
