Joel Calafell, M.D., joins Baptist Health Medical Group as a General Surgeon

MIAMI – September 29, 2021 – Joel Calafell, M.D., joins Baptist Health Medical Group, part of Baptist Health, as a general surgeon. Dr. Calafell specializes in colon and rectal surgery and has extensive training in robotic surgery. He was born and raised in Miami and is fluent in English and Spanish.

Dr. Calafell joins Baptist Health South Florida from the Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery.

During his general surgery residency, Dr. Calafell was elected administrative chief resident and awarded the Golden Humanism Award (Best Resident Teacher). He was also elected president of the Student Government Association in medical school.

His research has been published in the Annals of Emergency Surgery and the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. He also authored a chapter in the book “Seminars in CRS: Entering Practice in Colorectal Surgery.”

Dr. Calafell earned his medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, followed by a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lehigh Valley Health Network.

He will see patients at 6200 SW 72 Street, Suite 502, in Miami.
