Chief Nursing Officer at Mariners Hospital and Fishermen’s Community Hospital announces retirement

TAVERNIER, FL – November 22, 2021 – Cheryl Cottrell, BSN, R.N., vice president and chief nursing officer of Mariners Hospital and Fishermen’s Community Hospital, part of Baptist Health, has announced plans to retire after 45 years of service in healthcare.

Ms. Cottrell started her career as a patient care technician at Keys Community Hospital, which later became Mariners Hospital. Early in her career, she gained valuable experience in such clinical departments as infection control, utilization review, and education and discharge planning. In 1984, Ms. Cottrell was promoted to assistant director of nursing, and in 1988 she was named vice president and chief nursing officer of Mariners Hospital. She gained additional nursing leadership responsibility in 2017 when she was appointed chief nursing officer of Fishermen’s Community Hospital.

Ms. Cottrell earned an Associate of Science degree in nursing at Miami Dade College and in 2009 was named a Hall of Fame inductee. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Florida International University and a Master of Science degree in health services administration at Barry University. She is a Board-certified nurse executive from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Active in the Keys community, Ms. Cottrell has served nearly 30 years on the Board of Directors of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition. She also has served as the hospital representative for both the Key Largo and Ocean Reef Chambers of Commerce. To advocate for the nursing profession, she is an active member of the South Florida Organization of Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association and Florida Nurses Association.

Ms. Cottrell enjoys spending time with her four adult children and their families, all of whom call the Florida Keys home.
