Baptist Health Orthopedic Care Now Offering Innovative BEAR® Implant to Treat Patients for ACL Tears
Implant First Innovation in ACL Tear Treatment in 30+ Years; Enables Injured ACL to Heal Itself
Miami, FL – February 13, 2023 – Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is now offering patients the BEAR® Implant for the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, one of the most common knee injuries in the U.S. The BEAR™ Implant is the first medical advancement to enable the body to heal its own torn ACL. This new approach is a paradigm shift from the current standard of care – reconstruction that replaces the ACL with a graft – and is the first innovation in ACL tear treatment in more than 30 years. James Robert Ross,M.D., orthopedic surgeon with Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, is the first doctor to use this technology for Baptist Health.
“I am honored to be the first surgeon with Baptist Health Orthopedic Care to use this new technology and help patients regain their mobility with the BEAR™ Implant,” said Dr. Ross. By using this approach to treat ACL tears, it will allow patients to have a faster recovery, regain muscle strength, and most importantly, return to their regular daily activities.”
The BEAR Implant, when deemed appropriate for use, is indicated for skeletally mature patients at least 14 years of age with a complete rupture of the ACL. Patients must have an ACL stump attached to the tibia to construct the repair. Unlike reconstruction, the BEAR™ Implant does not require a second surgical incision site to remove a healthy tendon from another part of the knee or the use of a donor tendon. The BEAR Implant acts as a bridge to help the ends of the torn ACL heal together.
Some of the benefits of using the BEAR Implant include:
“We have made significant progress over the years when it comes to providing treatment for those who have suffered a tear to their ACL, however the BEAR® Implant sets a new standard when it comes to this specific care,” said John Uribe, M.D., chief
medical executive and orthopedic surgeon at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. “There are significant benefits using this method and we look forward to making this innovative treatment available to the community.”
