Baptist Health Reaches Construction Milestone on New Proton Therapy Treatment Facility at the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute

September 20, 2024

BOCA RATON, FL – September 20, 2024 – Baptist Health announced today that it has reached a new construction milestone on the highly anticipated proton therapy treatment facility at the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The hospital celebrated the key milestone with a “topping-off” ceremony, bringing the system once step closer to helping deliver a new generation of radiation oncology to the Palm Beach and Broward County communities.

Once complete, the new proton therapy treatment facility will feature the most advanced form of radiation therapy using high-energy protons to treat tumors. This project represents the second proton therapy center for Baptist Health Cancer Care – comprised of Lynn Cancer Institute and Miami Cancer Institute – with the first having been installed at Miami Cancer Institute as South Florida’s first proton therapy center.

“At Lynn Cancer Institute, our standing goal is to provide comprehensive and innovative cancer care to our patients,” said Louise Morrell, M.D., Chief Medical Executive, Lynn Cancer Institute. “We are thrilled to be able to provide this cutting-edge treatment; it is a true nod to the future of healthcare in this community.”

On-site at the event, physicians, executives, board members and other staff signed and left messages on the final beam, making their mark on history before it was hoisted by a crane to the top of the building. The $64 million dollar project was funded through generous gifts, including that of Barbara C. Gutin, long-standing Boca Raton Regional Hospital philanthropist, and the Estate of Richard Blackman. Christine E. Lynn, philanthropist and namesake of the Lynn Cancer Institute, was also in attendance to speak on the importance of the project.

This milestone comes at an exciting time for both the hospital and the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, as it moves forward with the largest fund-raising initiative in Boca Regional’s history, the Keeping the Promise Campaign. The hospital also recently received High Performing ratings in colon cancer surgery in the U.S. News & World Report 2024-2025 rankings.
