Baptist Health Foundation Receives $1 Million Gift from Cabrerizo Family Foundation for Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute

March 14, 2024

MIAMI, FL – March 14, 2024 – Baptist Health Foundation announced that the Cabrerizo Family Foundation has made a $1 million gift to Baptist Health Foundation in support of the Urologic Oncology Fund at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health. The gift was recognized in a naming ceremony on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, with the unveiling of the Cabrerizo Family Foundation Welcome Center on the second floor of the Institute’s research facility.  The gift will support the Institute’s research and clinical trials that focus on the understanding and treatment of urologic cancer.

“We are very grateful to the Cabrerizo Family Foundation for this remarkable gift,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “Their generous support will be instrumental in advancing important research into urological cancer, helping save lives and improve outcomes for patients in South Florida and beyond.”

Tom and Vivian Cabrerizo have been among Baptist Health Foundation’s most generous donors since 2006, supporting funds throughout Baptist Health.  The $1 million gift through their foundation was donated in gratitude for the care Mr. Cabrerizo received from Miami Cancer Institute physicians Marcio Fagundes, M.D., a radiation oncologist and medical director of radiation oncology and photon therapy; and Murugesan Manoharan, M.D., a surgical oncologist, chief of urologic oncologic surgery and Abbhi Family Endowed Chair in Urologic Oncology.

Led by Vivian Cabrerizo, the Cabrerizo Family Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Florida that supports healthcare organizations and provides educational and extracurricular opportunities serving youth with limited economic means. “South Florida residents need world-class cancer care in their community, and we believe supporting Miami Cancer Institute’s research and education is a path to this goal,” said Ms. Cabrerizo. “Our hope is that we can help improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with urologic cancer.”

“The Cabrerizo family’s gift is a reflection of their faith in our work,” said Michael Zinner, M.D., CEO and executive medical director of Miami Cancer Institute and Baptist Health Cancer Care. “Philanthropic investments such as these will enable us to increase our research and clinical trials, expand patient access and position us for additional funding and national recognition on our path to becoming a leader in groundbreaking cancer care and treatment.”

Miami Cancer Institute, which opened in 2017, cares for an average of 1,200 patients each day. The Institute provides unparalleled expertise in individual cancers, and access to the world’s latest cancer discoveries, most effective treatments and best outcomes – all right here in South Florida.
