Baptist Health Foundation Celebrates JPMorgan Chase’s Art Donation to Miami Cancer Institute

December 9, 2022

MIAMI, FL – December 9, 2022 – Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute recently hosted an evening celebration featuring the unveiling of an art collection donated by JPMorgan Chase to Baptist Health Foundation for an installation at the Institute. The collection comprises a selection of handcrafted quilts and textiles, part of the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, which were created by artists from around the globe between 1880 and the late 20th century.

“We are very grateful for this special gift from JPMorgan Chase,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “As part of the exhibit at the Shaham Family Gallery in the lobby at Miami Cancer Institute, the textiles collection will create enriching artistic experiences for patients, families, visitors and staff.”

The evening reception was attended by leaders from Baptist Health Foundation; Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute executives, physicians and donors; JPMorgan Chase executives and clients; and members of the South Florida arts community. Speakers included Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute CEO and Executive Medical Director Michael Zinner, M.D., and J.P. Morgan Private Bank Southeast Regional Head Simon Levine.

“This textiles collection is truly remarkable, and we are thrilled to exhibit it here at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute,” said Dr. Michael Zinner. “We have received such great feedback from our patients and their families that our art exhibitions and programs make a positive difference in their emotional well-being and outlook, which is so important to the healing process.”

The JPMorgan Chase Art Collection is one of the most established corporate collections

in the world. Its mission is to connect clients, colleagues and communities through art and the conversations it can start. JPMorgan Chase’s collection of quilts and textiles donated to Miami Cancer Institute come from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Many of these intricately crafted textiles and quilts were produced by unknown artisans who relied on knowledge handed down from generation to generation to create the pieces.

“Our firm is committed to uplifting the local communities our employees work and live in through community partnerships and philanthropic efforts,” said Simon Levine, Southeast Region Head, J.P. Morgan Private Bank. “We are glad to hear the exhibit has had a positive impact on the patients and their families and appreciate the opportunity to share the collection with Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.”

The arts have been given a significant role in cultivating a healing environment at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Research shows that artistic intervention, where the arts are brought into a healthcare facility, can improve health outcomes and transform the patient experience. Benefits can include reduced pain and anxiety, and improved well-being during cancer treatment.

With the support of donors to Baptist Health Foundation, Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute is bringing the arts to its staff, patients and caregivers in numerous ways. Through its Arts in Medicine program, which is fully funded by philanthropy, visual, literary and performing artists-in-residence engage patients in creative, immersive experiences in the waiting areas, lobbies and infusion suites. Patients experience music, song, color and visual beauty, and create their own masterpieces.

To complement the Arts in Medicine program, the Institute’s Art and Design program features the work of dozens of visual artists and artisans from all over the world. In addition to the selection of handcrafted quilts and textiles generously provided by JPMorgan Chase, a series of special exhibitions, mounted in the Shaham Family Gallery, will change periodically. On the exterior of the Institute, large-scale sculptures, donated by philanthropists Earl and Christy Powell, enhance the surrounding grounds.

Philanthropic support sustains the robust art programs at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Funding supports key programmatic components, including creative art therapies, artists in residence, art installations (including sculptures, paintings, quilts and handicrafts), research, supplies, technology, people and education.
