A Special Anniversary Message

Celebrating 75 Years: A Legacy of Caring

On March 3, 1949, Doctors Hospital admitted its first patient – a mechanic from Pan American Airways. The hospital was the brainchild of renowned local surgeon John T. Macdonald, M.D., and three other physicians, AD Amerise, M.D., Joseph Lucinian, M.D., and Herbert Virgin, M.D., who realized the need for hospital beds in Coral Gables. In the wake of World War II, the community was booming as thousands headed south to build their post-war lives amidst our sunny shores.

The community took pride in the two-story, 98-bed and 24-bassinet building. The staff was close-knit, and many lived in the area and socialized with each other. Much has changed in 75 years. But what hasn’t is our steadfast commitment to our mission of providing the highest quality care to our patients.

Doctors Hospital, located in the heart of historic Coral Gables, has provided high-quality medical care to the community since 1949. Recognized as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, Doctors Hospital offers general and specialized services, including orthopedics and sports medicine, cardiac care and sports cardiology, general surgery, robotic and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, geriatric medicine and pulmonary care. The emergency department at Doctors Hospital provides a high-tech, high-touch approach to medicine. The facility also boasts a state-of-the-art intensive care unit and provides a wide range of outpatient diagnostic services.

Doctors Hospital is also home to the Miami HEAT Sports Medicine Center at Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute. The 49,000-square-foot facility houses all of the Institute’s orthopedic specialties, including an ambulatory surgery center on the top floor.

U.S. News & World Report recognized Doctors Hospital as high-performing in Geriatrics, Orthopedics, COPD, Hip Replacement, Kidney Failure, Knee Replacement, and Pneumonia. Resources for Hospital Data

Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) makes available data on hospital prices and performance on their Internet website at quality.healthfinder.fl.gov/ and pricing healthfinder.fl.gov. The data on hospital prices and performance are based on a compilation of charges for the average patient. A patient's bill may vary from the average shown, depending upon the severity of illness and individual care needs. The service bundle information is a non-personalized estimate of costs that may be incurred by the patient for anticipated services and that actual costs will be based on services actually provided to the patient.
