PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at Miami Cancer Institute

The Specialized Residency in Oncology at Baptist Hospital of Miami is a 52-week training program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the program is to develop a well-rounded oncology practitioner and effective clinical instructor who can provide high-level clinical care in a variety of oncology settings and effectively share knowledge and promote learning to pharmacists, students, and other health-care disciplines.

The Oncology Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY-2) Residency at Baptist Hospital of Miami and the Miami Cancer Institute is a 12-month training program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the program is to develop well-rounded oncology pharmacy practitioners and effective clinical instructors capable of providing a high-level patient care and clinical instruction to pharmacy and medical trainees.

The program provides residents with experience in adult medical oncology, malignant hematology, bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy, pediatric hematology and oncology, and investigational drug services in acute and ambulatory care settings. The training is coordinated to ensure the resident masters each of the disease states established within the ASHP Practice Standards for PGY-2 oncology programs. Residents will develop skills in designing and monitoring evidence-based therapeutic regimens for individuals with cancer to ensure optimal outcomes while minimizing adverse drug events. In addition, the resident will develop skills in leadership, research, and teaching through projects, drug information, education and precepting PGY-1 residents and pharmacy students.

The Miami Cancer Institute Pharmacy Team was awarded the 2022 Warren E. Weaver/Richard P. Penna Award by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) recognized for the organization's commitment to advancing health equity and patient care. The department has over 30 board-certified pharmacists, several of whom carry dual board certification, and residency preceptors within all specialized practice environments in oncology including breast, lung, head and neck, skin, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, gynecologic cancers, neuro oncology, hematology, bone marrow transplant, and cellular therapy, investigational drug therapies, and pediatric hematology and oncology.

After successful completion of this program, the graduating resident will have the necessary knowledge and skills in order to achieve board certification in oncology and demonstrate clinical and leadership abilities to perform as an oncology clinical specialist.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Program Eligibility

  • Pharm.D. degree from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency (certificate required)
  • Must obtain a Florida pharmacist’s license

Application Requirements

Prospective residents are required to submit the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Official transcripts from all colleges of pharmacy attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional references utilizing standard form required by PhORCAS™
  • Personal statement of intent
Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.
