The Pharmacy Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Residency at Homestead Hospital, established in 2015, is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for contemporary pharmacy practice in a community hospital setting.

Our residency program enhances the resident’s competencies in managing medication use systems and optimizing drug therapy. This program is designed to foster professional growth and independence while providing mentorship and supervision. During this training, the resident will develop advanced skills in the areas of critical care, emergency medicine, antimicrobial stewardship, research, and leadership. The program is designed to equip the graduate with the competencies that facilitates attainment of board certification in pharmacotherapy specialty and/or PGY2 specialty residency training as well as achievement of a desired position in the field of pharmacy.

  • A continuous quality improvement program focuses on patient safety with a detailed emphasis on medication safety as it relates to all aspects of our medication management process.
  • With the high volume of ED visits, our resident acquires the experience necessary to exercise leadership for emergency pharmacy practice in the healthcare system.
  • With 98 percent of medication orders processed electronically; the pharmacy promotes patient safety with sophisticated technology. From storage in and dispensing from a BD Logistics carousel, sterile IV medication preparation utilizing the DoseEdge ™ gravimetric system, automated dispensing cabinets on every nursing unit, management of emergency carts with Traysafe (utilizing 2D barcodes and high-resolution imaging), to bedside barcode medication administration, Homestead Hospital pharmacy keeps abreast with innovation for the safety of our patients and staff.

Our program’s vision is to develop the resident into an effective, proficient, confident clinician and educator, and to enhance professional and clinical skills.
