Family Medicine - Sports Medicine Fellowship

West Kendall Baptist Hospital / Florida International University

In partnership with the Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, we offer a one-year primary care sports medicine fellowship to further your sports medicine education. The Institute is world-renowned and has more than 20 years' experience treating professional athletes and community orthopedic and sports medicine injuries.

The program's faculty physicians are fellowship-trained and are excited to provide fellows advanced knowledge, training and experience to handle the breadth of office-based and sideline sports medicine. The Institute's practice offices are the program's primary training site.

Miami is an ideal location for a fellow to learn and practice sports medicine. The Institute provides unique year-round coverage opportunities for a wide variety of high school, collegiate and professional sports teams. Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute is the official sports medicine provider for:

  • Miami Dolphins
  • Miami HEAT
  • Florida Panthers
  • Miami FC Soccer
  • Miami-Dade County Public schools Athletics
  • Florida International University Athletics
  • The Miami Marathon and Half Marathon
  • Miami Open Tennis
  • Orange Bowl
  • Miami Beach Bowl

Our goal is to provide fellows with a comprehensive and exceptional education in team coverage and clinical care. Working directly with team physicians and athletic trainers helps the fellow develop skills in caring for a wide range of medical and musculoskeletal problems.

Application Requirements

Our program is ACGME-accredited and participates in the National Resident Matching Program. All applicants must be a graduate of a United States ACGME-accredited Family Medicine residency program, be board-eligible for Family Medicine and qualify for an unrestricted Florida medical license. Visa applicants are not accepted at this time.

Curriculum

Rotations span six months to all year.  Longitudinal curriculum allows for maximum exposure to athletic events without compromising the clinical experience.  Our faculty works as a team, and the fellow is integrated into that team from day one.  For example, on Monday mornings the fellow will review imaging from the weekend's injuries with the MSK radiologists.  These are injuries the fellow might have seen during sideline coverage and see later in clinic –– providing for great continuity of care and learning.

Whether it's sideline coverage, ultrasound diagnostics, community outreach or direct patient care, we have many learning opportunities to suit individual goals. While the program is designed to meet ACGME requirements, the flexibility in the schedule allows for the fellowship to be built around individual interests.
