The influenza virus, or "the flu" as it is commonly called, affects the respiratory system and spreads quickly, especially during the fall and winter months.

Unlike its more benign cousin "the common cold", the influenza virus can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, bacterial infections and hospitalizations, the CDC says, so it's important to seek treatment right away if you experience any of the following symptoms.

  • Body and muscle aches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Flu Vaccines

The best protection against the flu is an annual influenza vaccine. Baptist Health South Florida offers flu vaccines at each Baptist Health Primary Care Location.

Diagnosing & Treating the Flu Online

Since the flu is highly contagious, if you experience any symptoms of the flu, speaking with a Board-certified physician from home via Baptist Health Care On Demand will help you get the treatment you need without exposing others to the illness.

During a video consult, the doctor will ask you a series of questions to determine if your symptoms point to the flu.

Once a diagnosis has been made, the doctor will come up with the best treatment plan for you, based on the duration and severity of your symptoms and your medical history. Your treatment plan for the flu may include:

  • Home treatment options, such as bed rest and increased fluid intake
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications or vitamin supplements
  • A prescription for antiviral medication, processed during the online visit
  • An in-person examination by a specialist may be recommended.
