About Homestead Hospital

Homestead Hospital has been a part of the south Miami-Dade community since 1940, when local physician James Archer Smith opened it as a 10-bed hospital east of Krome Avenue. Today, Homestead Hospital is a modern, full-service 147-bed facility with private rooms. Services includes an Emergency Center with 44 treatment rooms and a trauma room, a separate Children’s Emergency Center, a critical care unit, and comfortably-appointed birthing suites. Homestead Hospital is also home to the new Baptist Health Rehabilitation, a hospital-based, acute inpatient rehabilitation unit featuring individualized programs for the care of adult and pediatric patients (ages 4 and older) who are facing an acute or disabling injury or illness. In addition, our “Healthy Homestead” vision is to be a community where people prioritize health and well-being. Working with our partners in South Dade, we seek to inspire and empower our residents to improve their nutrition, fitness and overall understanding of wellness. To assist with this effort, the Grow2Heal garden on the hospital campus grows organic food that is served to patients, visitors and staff, and is also used to educate the community through school fieldtrips, health fairs, cooking demonstrations, wellness workshops, and support groups.

Pediatric Emergency Care

Pediatric Emergency Care

Baptist Health and Nicklaus Children’s Health System are working together to ensure that the children in our community continue to receive the highest quality emergency care. The pediatric emergency physicians at Homestead Hospital are now part of Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists, the medical group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System.

Our physicians will continue to provide the same high-quality, compassionate care you have come to expect. Through this collaboration, they will also have access to the extensive array of pediatric subspecialists on Nicklaus’ medical staff to support your child’s specialized care needs.

Pediatric patients treated in a Baptist Health emergency department and requiring hospital admission will be transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to receive ongoing care. Homestead Hospital continues to provide neonatal intensive care.

Grow2Heal

The Grow2Heal community garden at Homestead Hospital is a creative solution to ongoing challenges with chronic disease management and preventive healthcare.

Hospital leadership dedicated vacant land adjacent to the hospital to develop an organic – and sustainable – garden as a way to offer the community fresh, nutritious foods with a far-reaching impact.

The three-acre garden can potentially grow 30,000 pounds of produce annually, and is served to patients, visitors and hospital staff. It is also used to educate the community through school fieldtrips, health fairs, cooking demonstrations, wellness workshops, and support groups.

Proper nutrition can help manage – or even prevent – chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart failure. And one of the keys to preventive health is starting young. More than 500 students toured the garden last school year as part of the hospital’s Grow Your Lunch fieldtrip program. During their visit, they planted seeds, harvested fruits and vegetables, and cooked their own lunch under the guidance of the community garden’s manager. They learned to appreciate the importance of fresh, nutritious foods through a unique farm-to-table experience.

Resources for Hospital Data

Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) makes available data on hospital prices and performance on their Internet website at FloridaHealthFinder.gov and Pricing.FloridaHealthFinder.gov. The data on hospital prices and performance are based on a compilation of charges for the average patient. A patient's bill may vary from the average shown, depending upon the severity of illness and individual care needs. The service bundle information is a non-personalized estimate of costs that may be incurred by the patient for anticipated services and that actual costs will be based on services actually provided to the patient.
