A First Step Toward Recovery: The Neuroscience Critical Care Unit

Dr--Fuentes08.jpgThe Neuroscience Critical Care Unit (NCCU) at Baptist Hospital was designed for patients with life-threatening conditions affecting the nervous system. An essential component of Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, the NCCU contributes to our goal of providing comprehensive care. The unit is staffed with a caring, multidisciplinary team trained to care for critically ill patients. Dedicated for the use of the Neuroscience Center, the 8-bed unit provides 24/7 observation of patients. The NCCU is equipped with technology essential to recovery, including sophisticated monitoring systems and therapeutic modalities such as hypothermia.

The NCCU Team

While technology is integral to the NCCU, our medical team is the core of this unit. Led by Medical Director Dr. Karel Fuentes, the NCCU specialists help patients recover from neurological diseases. Patient care is coordinated through direct interaction and discussion among the team of specialists during daily rounds. Every stage of recovery is coordinated, from the NCCU to the Neuro Progressive Care Unit. Our multi-specialty team includes:

  • Neurointensivist

  • Neurosurgeons

  • Nurse Practitioners
