Interventional Neuroradiology: Making the Technology of Tomorrow Available to Patients Today

To meet our goal of delivering comprehensive neuroscience care, Miami Neuroscience Institute partnered with Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute to form Interventional Neuroradiology Services. This department’s highly skilled physicians and state-of-the-art technology provide patients with a powerful ally against vascular problems such as stroke, intracranial atherosclerosis and cerebral aneurysm.

What is Interventional Neuroradiology?

A relatively new field of medicine, interventional neuroradiology (INR), uses minimally invasive procedures to correct problems in the brain or spine. Instead of traditional open surgery, INR procedures are performed through tiny incisions no larger than a nickel. Our Interventional Neuroradiology Suite features biplane neuroangiography technology and a computerized system. The computer transmits images from inside the brain or spine onto a monitor, allowing the surgeon to clearly see the problem and to monitor the procedure. Using this method, the physician inserts a catheter or cannula (similar to a long, thin tube), into the patient’s groin, threading it through blood vessels to the problem area. With the tube in place, the physician uses medical devices, medication or special techniques to correct the condition.

INR is an improvement over traditional methods which require opening the skull or exposing the spinal column. Recovery after INR is faster and less painful and it offers better patient outcomes.

On the Forefront of Technology and Research

Miami Neuroscience Institute is committed to using the most advanced technologies available. Our surgeons treat patients with complex conditions that other facilities often will not operate on. They also work with patients whose previous treatments were unsuccessful.

Our INR experts treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Ruptured/Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysm
  • Arteriovenous Malformations of the Brain and Spine
  • Blocked Arteries
  • Acute Stroke

  • Procedures offered include:

  • Intra-extracranial Angioplasty and Stenting
  • Endovascular Treatment of Acute Stroke
  • Endovascular Embolization of Aneurysm
  • Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography
  • Preoperative Embolization of Brain/Spine Tumors

To provide better patient outcomes, our specialists study emerging treatments through clinical research trials and publish their findings in major medical journals.
    The Interventional Neuroradiology Team
The Medical Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, Dr. Italo Linfante, specializes in minimally invasive procedures to treat stroke and brain aneurysm. He is a founding member of the Society for Vascular and Interventional Neurology and serves on its board. Dr. Linfante leads a team of multidisciplinary experts who specialize in treating vascular conditions of the brain or spine.
Dr. Guilherme Dabus directs the fellowship program in interventional neuroradiology at Miami Neuroscience Institute and Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. He is a senior member of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery.
