Aortic stenosis treatment options

Aortic stenosis affects 1.5 million Americans each year. It is caused when the aortic valve thickens and the space inside the valve narrows, increasing pressure and minimizing blood flow.

Symptoms of aortic stenosis are often confused with aging – shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness or lack of desire to exercise. If aortic stenosis is left untreated, it can lead to heart failure or death.

Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute offers patients two minimally invasive treatment options to treat aortic stenosis - TAVR and SAVR.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

The experts at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute are committed to providing our patients with the most advanced heart and valve surgical options available. Our specialists have been at the forefront of device trials for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and our patients have benefited greatly from the minimally invasive surgical option. Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR)

Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is a surgical treatment option for aortic stenosis. Traditionally, SAVR has been performed through a foot-long incision that involves opening the patient's chest. The aortic valve is then surgically removed and replaced.

At Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, our surgeons use a less invasive technique to make a three-inch incision between the second and third ribs to completely replace the heart valve. This minimally-invasive approach to SAVR is safe and takes less time in the operating room to complete than a traditional open aortic valve replacement procedure. Our patients have shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to activities of daily living. Our team has performed many minimally invasive SAVR procedures with exceptional results.

Valve sparing root replacement

Patients with an aneurysm or leaking aortic valve typically undergo open-heart surgery with a large incision to replace the aortic valve. The valves traditionally used have been made of carbon and require patients to be on blood thinners for the rest of their lives.

Mitral Valve Repair

Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute has taken the most innovative mitral valve repair technique and incorporated n a minimally invasive approach. This gives our team of experts the opportunity to repair almost 99% of leaking mitral valves with a less invasive surgery.

For this procedure, the surgeons go through a small keyhole incision between the fourth and fifth ribs. Using advanced imaging, our experts are able to arrive directly at the leaking spot. Using the most advanced repair techniques available, our cardiac surgeons can give patients a curative mitral valve repair without an intensive surgery. Patients are able to have shorter hospital stays, increase their quality of life almost immediately and return to their daily activities sooner.
