Rehabilitation

 

West Kendall Baptist Hospital offers an individualized, multidisciplinary treatment approach to patient care, with the patient and family at the center of our team. Our highly skilled physical, occupational and speech therapists provide one-on-one treatments both in the acute care hospital and in the outpatient program. Working in partnership with physicians at West Kendall and throughout the community, our rehabilitation team is focused on the primary goal of returning you to the highest functioning level of independence. These are some of the services the team can offer patients recovering from an illness, injury or surgery:

Inpatient

Our rehabilitation team is here seven days a week to develop an individualized treatment plan to help you recover from your illness or injury, including: ​

► Physical Therapy

  • Evaluation and treatment of orthopedic postoperative and nonoperative conditions, including joint replacements, trauma and general decline in function due to illness and hospitalization.
  • Active and passive range-of-motion exercises.
  • Strengthening and neuromuscular re-education.
  • Coordination and balance exercises.
  • Transfer training, bed mobility training and gait training with assistive devices such as walkers, canes and crutches, and pre- and post-prosthetic training.

  • ► Occupational Therapy

  • Evaluation and treatment of orthopedic postoperative and nonoperative conditions, upper extremity joint replacements, trauma and general decline in function due to illness and hospitalization.
  • Focus on gross and fine motor skills to improve patient’s daily function with activities of daily living, by adapting the environment, modifying and teaching the task, and educating the family/patient.
  • Training including grooming, hygiene, dressing, eating and bathing, with recommendations for the use of adaptive equipment.
  • Fine motor coordination, functional transfers, and home exercise program and safety education.
  • Active and passive range-of-motion exercises.
  • Strengthening and neuromuscular re-education.
  • Therapeutic exercises and training to achieve maximum functional mobility after upper extremity fractures, surgeries or muscle and/or ligament injuries.

  • ► Speech/Language Pathology

  • Swallowing evaluations including:
  • Modified barium swallow evaluations.
  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia).
  • Slurred/impaired speech (dysarthria).
  • Acquired language disorders (aphasia).
  • Motor programming disorders (verbal/oral apraxia).
  • Voice disorders.
  • Oral motor, orofacial strengthening exercises.
  • Pharyngeal/laryngeal strengthening exercises.
  • Multimodality cueing including auditory, visual, and tactile feedback.
  • Compensatory strategy training.
  • Meal safety training.
  • Instruction and implementation of a home exercise program.


  • Outpatient

    West Kendall Baptist Hospital offers a broad array of outpatient rehabilitation services five days per week to meet your needs. A physician is required to initiate services. Each patient is scheduled individually with a skilled licensed therapist, who will develop a plan of care to meet your specific rehabilitation need. Services offered include but are not limited to: ​

    Physical Therapy

  • Evaluation and treatment of orthopedic conditions including joint replacements, trauma, post-knee arthroscopy, post-ligament or meniscal tears, arthritis, fractures.
  • Strengthening and neuromuscular re-education.
  • Coordination and balance exercises.
  • Spinal rehabilitation – Pre- or post-surgery interventions.
  • Manual therapy and joint mobilization.
  • Kinesio taping.
  • Home exercise program and education in safety.

  • ► Occupational Therapy

  • Evaluation and treatment of orthopedic postoperative and nonoperative conditions including upper extremity joint replacements, trauma and arthritis.
  • Treatment for postsurgical rotator cuff repairs.
  • Tennis elbow and repetitive motion injuries.
  • Therapeutic exercises and training to achieve maximum functional mobility after upper extremity fractures, surgeries or muscle and/or ligament injuries.
  • Home exercise programs targeted to educate on adaptive equipment to increase independence and function.
  • Strengthening and neuromuscular re-education.
  • Therapeutic exercises and training to achieve maximum functional mobility after upper extremity fractures, surgeries or muscle and/or ligament injuries.
