Seniors

"You're only as old as you feel" may be a commonplace sentiment, but it's a philosophy that's taken seriously at South Miami Hospital and other Baptist Health hospitals.

In 1995, Baptist Health opened its Department of Senior Services to address the special needs of men and women age 55 and over. The program is dedicated to the attitude that aging isn't a disease, but rather another developmental stage in life -- one that can be as full and as fruitful as any other.

The department is intended to be an important source of information and assistance for seniors. A popular feature is the series of programs and lectures, some given in Spanish, on a wide range of topics.

Led by members of Baptist Health's medical staff and other professionals in the community, the programs deal with medical topics (understanding laparoscopic surgery, living with diabetes, new hernia procedures, cardiac tests, help for sleep problems, improving memory); personal improvement (intimacy and sexuality after 60, new treatments in cosmetic and laser surgery, the power of positive thinking, dynamic living for life satisfaction); financial matters (tax preparation, long-term insurance, advanced directives and living wills, help with Medicare and Social Security); and enjoyment (travel tips, how to take better pictures, computers and the Internet, preserving family stories, healthy cooking).

Other Senior Services programs include support groups for people with various medical concerns or those trying to cope with such problems as alcohol abuse, bereavement or the role of caregiver; discounts on gift shop purchases, exercise classes, nutrition counseling and health assessments; and free screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, and prostate and skin cancer.

People age 55 and over are also eligible to join the Senior Dining Club, a program offering discounted meals at Baptist, South Miami and Homestead Hospitals. In addition to getting nutritious meals at about half the cost of restaurant meals, diners also enjoy the opportunity of socializing with other club members.
