Occupational and Environmental Medicine

South Miami Hospital’s Occupational and Environmental Medicine program is the only hospital-based program of its kind in Florida. The program offers comprehensive services for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness or injury resulting from occupational or environmental causes. As a hospital-based program, Occupational and Environmental Medicine has the clinical and technological support of South Miami Hospital.

Conditions diagnosed and treated include respiratory problems, asthma, asbestosis, chemical exposure, mesiothelioma and lung cancer.

Additionally, the Occupational and Environmental Medicine program staff, led by Medical Director Allan Feingold, M.D., examines medical records and documents to determine whether occupational or environmental hazards led to injury or disease. Dr. Feingold, a certified B-reader by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), reads and analyzes chest X-rays and reports his findings to the military and the government.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine also works closely with companies, organizations, attorneys, the military and the government to provide expert analysis of complex medical cases in or pending litigation. The staff studies manufacturing, building and technological processes, as well as materials and ingredients used, to determine possible health risks to workers or consumers.
