Volunteer at South Miami Hospital

South Miami Hospital’s warm environment and focus on patient care and customer service makes it a great place to volunteer your time. Our volunteers work at the information desk, in nursing units, at the Gift Shop and in various departments throughout the hospital. Volunteering is a wonderful way to learn new job skills, meet new people and feel good about helping others.

We have volunteers coming from all walks of life: retirees, stay-at-home moms and dads, working professionals, college students and teens fulfilling community service requirements for school. Teens, ages 15 to 18, are placed in our After School Volunteer Program or Teen Volunteer Summer Program, which runs from June through August.

Our volunteers work a minimum of one shift per week, lasting two to four hours. The Volunteer Services office works to accommodate their schedules and areas of interest. On this site you will find more information on how to become a volunteer at South Miami Hospital.

You may fill out an application online or contact the Volunteer Services office to have an application mailed to you. After the application has been submitted, the prospective volunteer will be contacted to schedule an interview. The intention of the interview is to get general information about why the applicant wants to volunteer and to discuss availability. At this time the applicant will have the chance to clarify any questions they may have. They also will be oriented about the requirements which need to be completed prior to beginning their volunteer work.

Thank you for your interest in becoming part of our group of volunteers.

For more information contact the Volunteer Services office at (786) 662-8130, or email SMHVols@baptisthealth.net.

The majority of our volunteer positions are in clinical areas, from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 7 pm. College students must apply early enough to be able to work throughout the entire school semester. The students must have excellent interpersonal skills and, above of all, be dependable.

o maximize their experience in the hospital, we are encouraging all college volunteers to work at least for 2 consecutive semesters, with a break in between.

In order to receive certification of Service H
ours, the students need to complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work.
Between February 1st and March 31st we accept applications from high school students interested in participating in the Teen Volunteer Summer Program which runs between June and August. This program is designed for students between 15 and 18 years old, who are willing to gain hospital experience and accumulate service hours. Read more under “Information – Teen Volunteer”

Teen Volunteers who start in the summer might be able to continue volunteering all year round, as part of the "After School Volunteer Program", as long as we have openings that match the s
tudent's availability.

Please return to the "
Volunteer Updates" in the future to check if new opportunities become available.

Before submitting an application, please carefully consider if:
  • Your schedule allows you to commit to a weekly volunteer shift of 3 to 4 consecutive hours, always on the same day and time.
  • You are able to treat your commitment as a volunteer as seriously as your work or school duties.
  • You consent to a background check and feel comfortable having a background check and submitting personal references.

  • As a college student, you are able to commit to work the entire school semester.

  • You agree to take a tuberculin skin test and to receive a mandatory influenza vaccination.

However, if any of the following affirmations is true, please re-evaluate your decision to apply at this time since South Miami Hospital will not be able to meet your expectations as a volunteer:

  • I hope that volunteering will lead me directly to employment at SMH
  • I want to gain clinical experience and practice the skills I learned at school
  • I am now looking for full time employment (*)

(*) In this case, wait until you are settled up in your new job then apply.
