Developmental Care

The goal of the developmental team is to promote a healthier environment for your baby by utilizing appropriate positioning aides, including snuggles, gel pillows, prone pillows and froggies. The positioning aides will help give your baby the secure feeling of still being in the uterus. At the same time, it will promote containment and body flexion. These tools create a neutral environment that can help reduce the length of stay and promote positive outcomes.

The developmental team will show you how to protect your baby by covering the isolette with thick blankets. As the baby gets stronger, you will learn how to provide positive touch and participate in kangaroo care, also known as skin-to-skin holding.

The baby will be placed upright on your bare chest to feel your warmth, touch and smell, and will be soothed by your steady heartbeat and breathing. Kangaroo care has been shown to provide relaxation and bonding, promote confidence, and may help to increase milk production and breastfeeding success. Your baby will also experience a more normalized temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, increased weight gain, fewer noscomial infections and reduce the incidence of respiratory tract disease.

Other studies suggest they may also have improved cognitive development, decreased stress levels, reduced pain response, normalized growth and positive effects on motor development.
