Kathy J. Schilling, M.D., FACR, is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and medical director of the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. She specializes in breast imaging and conducts clinical research to identify and validate new imaging and interventional techniques.
Dr. Schilling serves as a sub-investigator for the Contrast Mammography Imaging Screening Trial, a national clinical study comparing the effectiveness of dual energy contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) to digital breast tomosynthesis in detecting breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breasts. The goal of the study is to determine if CESM can identify more cancers with fewer false positives compared to DBT in this high-risk population.
In the initial stages of her 40-year career, Dr. Schilling was an early adopter of percutaneous breast biopsy performed with stereotaxis and ultrasound. She has also been involved in the validation process of intelligent computer-assisted detection, positron emission mammography, automated 3D breast ultrasound, digital breast tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography, contrast-enhanced mammography biopsy, shear wave elastography, optico-acoustic imaging of the breast and her latest research focuses on artificial intelligence in breast imaging
Dr. Schilling has been honored with multiple awards for her clinical and teaching expertise. She has mentored numerous radiologists and surgeons and developed several in-house fellowship programs. She was instrumental in the Institute’s designation as a National Showsite for GE Women’s Healthcare, hosting nearly 200 site visits with prestigious hospitals from around the world. These programs have enabled physicians to practice in the Schmidt Family Center for Breast Care and gain expertise in advanced medical technologies and the efficient operation of a comprehensive breast center.
Dr. Schilling is an affiliate assistant professor of clinical biomedical science at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. She is a member of several professional organizations and serves on numerous leadership committees at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. She has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed articles and has presented her research at national and international symposiums.
Dr Schilling earned her medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. She completed a four-year diagnostic radiology residency, during which she served as chief resident, as well as a one-year diagnostic imaging fellowship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.
