About Joel Andrew Calafell, MD
Joel Calafell, M.D., is a general surgeon at Baptist Health Medical Group. Dr. Calafell specializes in colon and rectal surgery and has extensive training in robotic surgery. He was born and raised in Miami and is fluent in English and Spanish.
Prior to joining Baptist Health Medical Group in 2021, Dr. Calafell was on staff at Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery. During his general surgery residency, Dr. Calafell was elected administrative chief resident and awarded the Golden Humanism Award (Best Resident Teacher). He was also elected president of the Student Government Association in medical school. His research has been published in the Annals of Emergency Surgery and the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. He also authored a chapter in the book “Seminars in CRS: Entering Practice in Colorectal Surgery.”
Dr. Calafell believes every patient deserves the best care possible and treats each patient like family. His greatest joy is managing a patient through the entirety of their care and telling them they are cured.
When he is not treating patients, Dr. Calafell enjoys cooking, exercising, watching sports and spending time with his family.
